Corn Bread

1 cup corn meal
1 cup flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup oil or shortening
1 egg
1 cup milk

Combine dry ingredients in bowl and mix well.

Cut in shortening until well blended. (If using oil, mix with liquids)

Beat egg and milk together (and oil if using). Mix with the dry ingredients until just blended.

Pour into greased 8" square pan. Bake at 400° for 25 minutes or until browned.
